FAQs on General Dentistry & Dental Health

When looking for a Herndon dentist you want to be sure you will find one that is experienced and professional. Your dental health is important. We have put together some of the most frequently asked questions regarding your dental health and what to look for when finding the right dentist for your care.

1. How often do I need to see the dentist?
The general recommendation for good dental health is twice a year for cleanings and exams. This can vary if you are having any special treatments. If you are having any tooth pain or gum swelling, then you should also seek dental care as soon as possible.

2. Why do I need my teeth cleaned if I brush and floss?
By having your teeth cleaned at the dental office, a professional dental team are able to do much more than brushing and flossing at home can do. A professional cleaning will get rid of any plaque and tartar buildup. It will also help keep track if there are any changes or decay. Good dental health is important for overall good health.

3. What will happen if I have a cavity?
Our dental office will make arrangements for you to have the cavity filled.
After the cavity is filled it is important to maintain proper dental care to avoid future cavities. If additional dental work is needed, then our staff will make the necessary appointments to complete the work.

4. Will getting a cavity filled hurt?
Typically when getting fillings or any dental work you will have the area around the tooth numbed with Novocain. This will ensure that you don't feel any pain or discomfort during the visit. The effects of the Novocain will last several hours. During more extensive dental work there are other options for sedation. Our dentists can discuss these options with you.

5. What causes tooth grinding?
Do you wake up with a jaw that feels stiff or sore, or have trouble opening your mouth all the way? You may be grinding or clenching your teeth as you sleep. This condition, known as bruxism, causes people to wear away the enamel on their teeth many times faster than those who do not clench or grind. Eventually, this can cause cracked teeth and other damage, requiring crowns and other treatments  to repair or replace teeth that have become worn and damaged. Visit the dentist for a night guard to provide relief and protect your teeth.

6. What are my anesthesia and sedative options?
Your options for anesthesia while undergoing dental treatments include local anesthesia (such as Novacaine) or general anesthesia, which is usually reserved for more extensive dental work. To ensure your comfort, you can ask our dentists about sedative options such as oral sedatives and nitrous oxide ('laughing gas.')

7. I am nervous about visiting the dentist and haven't gone in years. Is there something that can help me?
Many people are anxious or fearful about visiting the dentist. Don't put it off any longer; our dentists specialize in treating patients with dental anxiety.  Whether you need a routine cleaning or more extensive dental work, our dentists can help you lower your level of anxiety and become comfortable during your dental appointment.
